“Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.”
-Laura Ingalls Wilder-
When I think of Summer I think of strawberries, watermelon and lemons. I think of driving around with the windows down, bonfires and s’mores. I think of corn on the cob and ice cold lemonade. I think of big blue skies and sunshine. I think of beach houses and sea breezes.
I remember as a young girl visiting my Grandmother in New Jersey for a few days one summer. The memory that sticks out in my mind the most was falling asleep to the sound of the ocean waves crashing into the shore. There’s just something about the simplicity of nature and days filled with sunshine thats so calming, you know?
When my friend Hayley, at A House With Books , asked me to join her and some extremely talented bloggers to bring our readers a Summer Hour Tour, sponsored by our friends at Hayneedle.com I was positively giddy. I feel honored to be collaborating with such talented women and friends! Plus Hayneedle.com is chock-full of amazing home decor goodness! I literally have a cart full right now of items to add to our home. I even caught my husband, Brandon adding some items too! It really is fun for the whole family.
If you’re coming from either Tammy’s or Nicole’s blog, welcome! I’m so glad you’re here! Aren’t there homes just lovely!!?
If you’ve been following along with me on Instagram then you know we have slowly been updating little bits of our new home. I decided to stick to the time period that the house was built, which is the late 1950’s. I have always appreciated Mid Century Modern style and I’ve been having a blast incorporating it into our forever home. So while sticking to my Mid Century theme as well as some Modern Farmhouse touches I really wanted to incorporate some fun summer colors. Like I mentioned earlier, summer makes me think of blue skies and sunshine, any guesses what colors I decided to use?
Well of course, blue and yellow!! So without further ado lets get to the fun part, the pictures!
When you walk into our home you’re immediately greeted by a lovely stone fireplace. It really is the focal point of the room. So my goal is to give the fireplace the attention it deserves, all while keeping it simple.
Our home is currently filled with wallpaper, so its going to take some time for us to remove all of it. We have decided to take it a little at a time. DIYing and home renovations with kiddos is no joke, buddies. Slow and steady wins the race, I think, haha!
I really wanted to get started with the fireplace wall because it is such a focal point of the room. Thankfully the wallpaper above the fireplace was fairly easy to remove. It was just the plaster underneath that gave us some trouble 😉 Nothing some drywall can’t fix. I was originally going to go with green for above the fireplace but settled on this stunning shade of blue, its called Riverway, also from Sherwin Williams.
I recently found that neat little Roman bust figurine at Goodwill for only $6.00
I also tore out a page from The Magnolia Magazine for a new piece of artwork for my frame and voila, a sweet little vignette! My goal for this builtin is to either shiplap the back or wallpaper the back. I haven’t decided yet but I promise y’all will be the first to know when I do!
“Home is where love resides,
memories are created,
friends and family belong
and laughter never ends.”

These beautiful ceramic containers are from Hayneedle.com I think they add the perfect touch to our fireplace mantle. They are gorgeously made with a lovely crackle finish to make them appear aged and unique! I think they compliment all of my vintage pieces so well.
I added a yellow velvet pillow cover to my blanket basket to keep with my blue and yellow theme.
I also scored those adorable vintage pennants from a local antique store for only a couple dollars each. I love the pop of color that they add to the gallery wall! And what doesn’t scream summer more than vintage road trip memorabilia! A blue place mat from Walmart and some greenery to finish off the space.
I was originally going to purchase new blue pillow covers, if you read my Mood Board post which you can find here then you saw the pillow covers from Amazon, here. However, they just weren’t in the budget right now so I took some blue and white cotton napkins and made myself some pillow covers. The blue and white feels classic and fresh, perfect for summer time! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, shopping my house is one of my favorite things to do!
I also added that gorgeous white wool pillow from Hayneedle, its absolute perfection. I try not to be super fussy over items in our home. I mean we do live here so things get used and with young boys maybe even slightly abused, haha. But I told them they aren’t allowed to touch that pillow…ever!! Haha! Sorry…not sorry!
I think the true star of the show though, is my new Mid Century Upholstered Bench from Hayneedle.com I mean could it be any more fabulous!? It adds texture and softness to the space. It was a total breeze to assemble and I’m in love with it. I think it’s exactly what this room needed.
I also moved my floor lamp to the other side of the couch and put my Mid Century inspired DIY table in this corner. To read about how to make your own, you can find that post here.
Cold lemon water with some fresh strawberries is one of my favorite things about summer time, it’s so refreshing during the hot humid months.
Another project I checked off my to-do list recently was painting the inside of our corner cabinet in our dining room. I had some left over paint from a pervious project. I really love how this piece turned out, I feel like its makes all of my thrifted Ironstone pop!
Floral aprons, sun hats and tea towels oh my! I love this happy little corner of my kitchen. It’s a lovely little catch all. When pretty and functional meet, I’m a happy girl!
Well that’s all she wrote, buddies! Thank you so much for stopping by today! I hope you enjoyed this little tour! I’ve linked all of my sources below for your convenience and please make sure to head to the other amazing blogs below for more Summer Home inspiration.
Blessings ❤ Bree
