An Heirloom Makeover

So my husband and I have been married for almost 8 years. And for the last almost 8 years I’ve been begging asking to paint this one little end table that just so happens to have belonged to his late Grandfather. My husband is a carpenter and was raised by a carpenter and works for his father’s building and remodeling business. He comes from a family that appreciates wood, haha. And they all really love stained wood…and while I can agree to some level that stained wood is very beautiful, this girl loves paint and light and bright. So you can imagine how much I’ve wanted to get my little hands on this table…Here it is in it’s before state. You can definitely tell that it was well loved. There was quite a bit of wear and tear.

This was the only before picture I had, but as you can see it just kind of blended in with the rest of the wood work…Somedays I feel like I’m drowning in a sea of dark wood, haha. But with marriage comes compromise and as I mentioned my husband loves wood stained..and he specifically bought this house for all of its original wood mouldings. So…this white loving girl has just learned to work with and love what she’s got.

Anyway…

I was so excited when I brought the subject up again a couple weeks ago. And this time surprisingly he said yes…there was just one catch. He picked the paint brand and color… I was so excited I didn’t even care. But, I knew white and chalk paint were most likely out of the running. In the end we went with Sherwin Williams Pro Classic brand. My husband likes this brand because there is a hardening agent in it. So, it helps to be more durable. Which is definitely an added bonus with young kids. We went with the color Peppercorn. I love a dark moody gray almost as much as a soft creamy white so I was A- Ok with this choice. I had never used this brand before but I can honestly say the coverage is great, it dried beautifully. We wanted matte but they didn’t have it in stock so we went with satin and I’m really happy with the finished product. It’s not tacky at all and there’s only a very small amount of luster. I didn’t distress at all because, I’ve only got one coat on it at this point…maybe eventually I’ll get to another coat, haha. This was after just one coat, I still haven’t painted another, maybe I’ll get to it eventually 😉

I think I may change the handles on the drawer, but I’m still mulling that over…any suggestions?
